Episode 2035: Meld Your Mecha; Heap Your Mecha, Fusing On

The gentle giant is a much-used character archetype in fiction. The huge, hulking, dangerous looking character, who is in reality kind and caring and unlikely to anger or resort to violence (although they can sometimes if a hot button is pushed). This is a subversion of expectations that has become so common that, in the words of TV Tropes, "it's probably more surprising for the musclebound hulk to turn out to be an irreconcilable jerk or bloodthirsty killer."

Hmmm...

How about setting up a character in your game as a gentle giant, so that everyone thinks that's what they are.... but then give them a core streak of malevolence. Make them seem like an innocent, when they are secretly the villain.

Yep, that's gotta be Voltron. Though I have no idea how a second giant robot would fit as I thought there was only the one giant combining robot in the show; Voltron 2.0 maybe? Probably only a single big robot though if the rest of the group is annoyed with Pete. If it actually is a giant robot that a single person controls in the show, I'm not surprised Pete was the one that controlled it. Those are some great expressions too; I've sometimes wondered how difficult it is to make these in-between comics, but I'm pretty sure those faces have popped up previously which would make it a lot easier to get the specific expressions.

Transcript

BB-8: I really wanted everyone to work together in my campaign.
Finn: How did that go?
Darth Kanata: He made it necessary for them to join forces to defeat the enemy creatures I was playing.
GM: Yes, literally. We had to meld our three individual mecha, plus two piloted by NPCs, together into one colossal fighting robot.
Yanni: Cool!
Finn: What were the NPCs like?
BB-8: One was a cocky joker type, the other was a “gentle giant” mechanic.
Chewbacca: The problem was each person could only control part of the combined robot. Pete wanted his own giant mecha.
[SFX]: Door
Rey: Hey everyone, sorry I’m late.
{beat}
Rey: What? I just got here. I can’t have ruined anything already, can I?
