Introducing a new character can be fraught with uncertainty. You never know how the established characters are going to react to them.
That's what makes it so much fun!
Commentary by memnarch (who has not seen the movie)
Very small, simple shapes in the design, GM is voicing the character; was this an attempt at making another droid sidekick that didn't go very far? I suppose it could also be an attempt at making a droid that looks like it could be a sidekick for the former Ochi. That feels a little too thinky for the movie writers to be correct though.
Also, why you gotta be mean to the poor little droid NPC like this, Pete? This doesn't have anything to do with getting stronger Force powers or leveling up!

BB-8: Well, we’re done something. I wouldn’t grace it with the name “planning”.
Finn: We’re going to Kijimi and looking for someone who can make us a replica dagger from 3PO’s memory.

GM: Oookay.
GM: While looking around the ship, <roll>...
GM: BB-8 stumbles across a deactivated droid. A small cone attached to a single wheel.
BB-8: Can I switch it on?
[SFX]: klik {BB-8 fiddles with controls on the back of the droid’s conical head}
D-O: Okay people, let’s take it from the top!
D-O: Wait. Who are you? Where’s Ochi?
BB-8: I’m sorry to say, Ochi is dead.
D-O: Okay, we’ll reshoot the death scene. This time with more pathos.
Rey: He’s been kinda skeletonised by a ravenous beast.
D-O: Method acting? I like it.
BB-8: Can I switch it off?
