Episode 2622: The Bare Mononym

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS

Children are great! Many game campaigns don't feature children in interesting roles, as players are more concerned with interactions between adults. But adding children can provide many benefits.

Realism: Children exist (unless you have a weird setting). So it makes sense that they should be around.

Variety: Children are different to adults, and can do different things. They can get away with some things that would be difficult for adults, and they may know things that others don't.

Surprise: Children can also be very clever and shouldn't be underestimated. Some players might not pay much attention to them, and this provides the opportunity to have a child be important to a plot or to provide important information, in an interesting or surprising way.

Honesty: Children can be honest to the point of bluntness. You may hear things from kids that adults would never say. Asking the local street kids for rumours may be more fruitful than hanging around at noble balls. They can also ask the hard questions, that might not get asked by anyone else (as in this strip).

Probability of Rey causing a scene rising..... Time for a panicky child to run away and cause problems in the next comic?

But Pete's kind of slipping here I think. It should have been easy to simply say "Solo, but I don't like that name." She'd had that assumption for a whole Episode, which means multiple play sessions for Pete, so it'd be kinda truthful! And if they heard any rumors about the serial name thief from the Resistance, it'd have been completely understandable why Rey didn't want to be associated with that name.
