If you want to set up a character with a memorable personality quirk, of course make the quirk obvious at the first interaction. But more importantly, follow it up with another demonstration at the second interaction. This turns it from a one-off strangeness into an ongoing character note, that the players will start to expect, and associate with that character.
Players can do this for their PCs, and of course GMs can do it with NPCs to make them more memorable.

It feels a little weird for Kanata to just leave Han sitting at the table. Why not come down as well? Finn got caught as a spy and left, BB-8 came down with Rey, Chewbacca's still back at the ship; is he just guarding the drinks? That'd be in character for Yanni, but the comic still has to follow how the movie looks for characters in a scene right?
Hmmmmmm. Now I'm really thinking that Kanata had his mind troubles because of that laser sword. I'm pretty sure Rey isn't going to suddenly start smoking (why would Disney let a protagonist do that?), but that'd be an amusing turn of events if it does happen.

Darth Kanata: Rey. What are you doing sitting on the floor?
Darth Kanata: Where’s your friend?
Rey: Uh, he left with those guys you pointed him to.
Darth Kanata: Oh. Did he leave any death sticks?
Rey: The laser sword. I touched it and... I had flashes of visions.
Darth Kanata: Hmmm. Sounds like you need some death sticks.
