Episode 2012: I Had Much Affliction

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

Some people like to get up close in your personal space when speaking. As a GM in a game you could mimic this be getting up off your chair and approaching players closely when speaking to them as NPCs.

I don't know if anyone's ever actually done this, but we have to come up with something new and crazy to try, don't we?

Definitely a dramatic and tense scene. People don't just climb on the table as part of a pleasant conversation. Kanata sounds like he's talking about having PTSD of some kind here too. I can see that being briefly mentioned in the movie, but not the part where it makes the Jedi look bad. That wouldn't do for getting people excited about Star Wars from what I know about Disney, especially with all the previous callbacks we've seen.

For all the neat things a Jedi can do, the children training part always felt weird. I'm pretty sure there are actual real world monasteries where children are sent for religious reasons, but they aren't trained to use extremely deadly weapons or develop superpowers. I never read most of the old, pre-sequel Expanded Universe media, but I know there's a lot available so I wouldn't be surprised if this was already pointed out already there somewhere.

Kanata really should have gotten some blue milk instead. That's got to be healthier than death sticks right? If it isn't, blue milk is a better name at the very least.

Transcript

Finn: What do death sticks give you that you’ll risk death for?
[SFX]: crawl... {Kanata climbs on the table and crawls over to stare at Finn from close range}
Darth Kanata: You don’t know a thing about me. Where I’m from. What I’ve seen.
Finn: I’m looking at the eyes of a man who wants to lose himself.
Darth Kanata: I was lost for a long time. My mind clouded. Vulnerable.
Darth Kanata: I was a Jedi. They expected great things of me.
Darth Kanata: But I did terrible things - great, yes, but terrible.
Darth Kanata: Death sticks make my mind impenetrable. They’re the only thing that helps me think clearly.
Darth Kanata: Escape that insidious influence telling me to do those terrible things.
Rey: Whoa.
Darth Kanata: Yeah. I used to be part of a religious cult, but then I found drugs and it helped me get my life back together.
