Episode 891: Our Only Trope

<<FIRST     <PREVIOUS     NEXT>     LATEST>>

Often in games equipment just works. Guns never jam, swords never shatter, armour never falls apart. Cars never fail to start. Basically, all the gear the PCs use is in perfect working order. They'll often tacitly assume that this will always be the case. Especially during crucial encounters or battle scenes.

Complacency can be a fun thing. That's all we're saying.

Transcript

Luke: I take careful aim and shoot the PIE fighter tailing Biggs. 14.
[SFX]: Pow!
GM: You miss.
Luke: What?
GM: Your guns seem to be pulling to the left. The control panel momentarily dimmed as you took the shot.
Luke: This ship is a piece of junk! Princess, you'd better not have—
Leia: Shut up and fly! This Rebellion is on a shoestring. You've got the best ship of the bunch, which you'd know if you'd read the pilot profiles!
[SFX]: Pow! pow!
Luke: My T-16 back on the farm had better guns!
Luke: I could get out and throw plasma bolts better than this!
Leia: Be my guest.
R2-D2: I could put a phase gradient across the plasma conduit to compensate. You know, if somebody cared about my presence here.
Leia: I care!
Biggs: Luke, it's real simple now. All y'all gotta do is bale the starter pump and wiggle the shanty lever widdershins afore each shot. While ya chuck a moonshine twist.
{beat}
Biggs: Kinda goes without sayin', really.
Luke: Help me, R2-D2, you're my only hope.
