Rick Blaine played by Jim.
Rick is a private detective working under the guise of a bar owner in Casablanca.
Jim is a rather gung-ho roleplayer, interested in action, cool fight scenes, and lucrative spoils over careful consideration or puzzle solving. He frequently acts before he thinks, which includes fixating on his own strange explanations for setting details that the GM hasn't explained yet.
Sam played by Ben.
Sam is Rick's partner in the detective business; his cover is as Rick's piano player.
Ben is a thoughtful roleplayer who tries to think through the best course of action within his character concept and the setting. He enjoys coming up with clever ways to justify the success of his plans within the premises of the setting.
Ugarte played by Pete.
Ugarte is black marketeer who stumbles aross the Lost Orders of Dr Fanastacoria, and is killed by the Nazis for knowing too much.
Pete is an old friend of Jim's. Jim invited him along to join in this new game. Pete designed a character to maximise all the skills he thought would come in most useful in a 1940s World War II adventure, at the cost of being Short and Ugly, with a Speech Impediment.
Captain Louie Renault played by Pete.
Captain Renault is the Chief of Police in Casablanca. He is French, and neutral in his political views, walking a line between the Nazis and European refugees.
Captain Renault is a replacement character for Pete after the Nazis kill Ugarte.
Victor Laszlo played by Sally.
Victor is a Russian spy, seeking the Lost Orders of Dr Fanastacoria to take back to Moscow.
Sally is Ben's younger sister. Ben took her along to the game on the first evening when his parents couldn't get a babysitter for the night. The GM quickly gave her a character to play so she wouldn't get bored. She enjoys the make-believe aspect of the game, but has some trouble separating it from reality.
Ilsa Lund played by Annie.
Ilsa is Victor's wife, and an old flame of Rick's. They met in Paris when he was working undercover to prevent the Nazi occupation.
Annie is an acquaintance of Ben's, who attends his drama classes. She was interested to come along and see what this "roleplaying games" thing was all about, after Ben described it to her as a sort of improvisational acting thing. She is dedicated to playing her character as a real, complex person with motivations inspired by a well-considered backstory.
Major Strasser is a Gestapo Officer. His main concern is recovering the Lost Orders of Dr Fanastacoria, a German scientist working on nuclear fission who mysteriously disappeared when trying to defect to America.
Signor Ferrari is a friendly business rival of Rick's. Rick trusts him implicitly but Captain Renault suspects him of some sort of nefarious underworld criminal activity. Who is right remains to be seen.
Carl is a waiter working at Rick's bar. He keeps an eye on Rick and Sam's detective business and tries to keep everyone out of trouble, which seems to be a very difficult thing to do with so many Nazis around.
Sascha is the bartender at Rick's bar. He is 38 years old, and uses his great wisdom and popularity to convince everyone in Casablanca to play roulette at Rick's tables. How exactly he gets away with this is a mystery.
